Drive Safely Work Week
October 1-5, 2007

Dear Safety Partner,

Take an active role in the Drive Safely Work Week 2007 campaign, October 1-5, 2007 and demonstrate your commitment to improving the safety and health of your employees by emphasizing the importance of driving safely both on and off the job.

The Minnesota Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (NETS) is offering organizations a number of free resources such as posters, payroll stuffers and brochures or you can purchase a Drive Safely Work Week tool Kit—packed with information, activities, reproducible fact sheets, camera-ready flyers and much more!

This year's Drive Safely Work Week campaign focuses on the positive actions that drivers can take to ensure their safety and the safety of others sharing the road as they drive for work or commute to and from work. The most DANGEROUS part of the workday for any employee is the time they spend in their vehicle. Every 13 minutes in the United States someone dies in a traffic crash; many of these incidents occur during the workday. In fact, one in four work-related deaths is due to a traffic-related trauma.

One of the best ways to keep employees safe on the road is to educate them about safety and promote safe driving practices. What is most compelling about partnering in the Drive Safely Work Week campaign is that employees tend to share what they have learned with their families and friends. This greatly expands the scope of the campaign, with the potential to improve the attitudes and behaviors of a great many drivers.

The National Safety Council reports that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death from ages 4 to 33 in the U.S. In Minnesota in 2005, 559 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes. Crashes affect the individual victims, their friends and family, and society in numerous ways. Deaths and injuries caused by crashes cause both personal suffering and financial loss not only to the victims, but also to the residents of the communities in which they occur.

The Minnesota Network of Employers for Traffic Safety (Minnesota NETS) is a non-profit, public-private partnership dedicated to reducing traffic deaths and injuries within our nation's work force. Minnesota NETS is coordinated by the Minnesota Safety Council and funded by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety.
