FACTS ABOUT FALLING
According to the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
In 2000, the Hennepin County Community Health Department released a study which found that falls were the leading cause of injury hospitalization (76 percent) and death (67 percent) among seniors age 65 and older. The Hennepin County senior injury death rate was among the highest in the nation.
- In the United States, one of every three people 65 years and older falls each year.
- Older adults are hospitalized for fall-related injuries five times more often than they are for injuries from other causes.
- Of those who fall, 20-30% suffer moderate to severe injuries that reduce mobility and independence, and increase the risk of premature death.
In response to these concerns, the county launched a Senior Fall Prevention Task Force. Members of the task force represented professional and community organizations interested in preventing falls among seniors. The Senior Fall Prevention Task Force developed a Senior Fall Prevention Screening Kit to help organizations carry out fall prevention activities in their respective communities.
The Fall Prevention Checklist is based on the hard work of Hennepin County Community Health staff and members of the Senior Fall Prevention Task Force.
